The Super Lamp, designed in 1981 by Martine Bedin, is one of the most playful and recognizable icons of the Memphis Milano movement. It is often described as a "luminescent pet" or a stylized stegosaurus that can be pulled along like a toy.

Design and Narrative

  • Concept: Bedin designed the lamp to be mobile, famously stating she wanted it to be like a "small dog that I could carry with me".

  • Form: It features a semi-circular body with six splayed bulb holders that resemble the armor of a stegosaurus.

  • Mobility: The lamp is mounted on four rubber wheels, allowing it to be dragged or rolled across a table or floor using its electrical cord.

Features and Materials

  • Construction: Crafted from lacquered fiberglass or polyurethane with metal cylinders for the bulb sockets.

  • Color Palette: Typically features a cobalt blue body with six cylinders in a vibrant array of colors: light pink, green, blue, yellow, olive green, and red. A yellow-bodied version is also produced.

  • Lighting: It uses six E14 bulbs (max 40W) which are exposed and integrated directly into the lamp's sculptural form.

  • Dimensions: Approximately 45 cm (W) x 30 cm (H) x 17 cm (D)
