Emerald is a striking, tall sideboard or dressing table designed by Nathalie Du Pasquier in 1985 for the Memphis Milano collection. Du Pasquier, the group's youngest founding member, utilized this piece to explore the boundary between two-dimensional graphic abstraction and three-dimensional functional form.

Design & Composition

  • Body: A rectangular wooden cabinet elevated by four thick, square-section pillars.

  • Surfaces: The structure is covered in a clashing mix of decorative plastic laminates and natural wood veneers (such as rootwood/briar), a signature Memphis technique to subvert traditional notions of luxury.

  • Unique Features: The piece is highly asymmetrical, incorporating mirrors, drawers, and playful plastic elements that create what the designer called a "nonsense game" of everyday surrealism.

  • Aesthetic Shift: Like other 1985 releases, Emerald reflects a shift toward more complex, architectural, and sometimes "darker" urban compositions compared to the bright pop-art feel of earlier years.
