Memphis - Hyatt 1984
Hyatt is a sculptural side table designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1984 for the Memphis Milano collective. Unlike many of the more colorful, plastic-heavy Memphis pieces, the Hyatt is noted for its "haughty" and imposing architectural silhouette, drawing inspiration from classical column structures.
Design & Materials
Structure: The table features a symmetrical silhouette where the base and the top are identical, mimicking a classical capital and base.
Finishes: There are two primary versions of the design:
Wood Essence: The most common version is finished in natural briar (rootwood) veneer, providing a warm, organic contrast to the industrial metal.
Glossy Black: A more refined version features a painted glossy black finish.
Metal Elements: The wooden top and base are connected and supported by four chrome-plated metal cylinders.
Specifications
Dimensions: Approximately 43 cm in diameter (16.9 in) and 42 cm in height (16.5 in).
Origin: Originally designed by Sottsass for his own house in Milan before being added to the official Memphis catalogue.
Authenticity: Authentic vintage pieces typically feature the "Memphis Milano Ettore Sottsass 1984 Made in Italy" label on the underside.
