The Nikko is a tall, totemic chest of drawers designed by Shiro Kuramata for the Memphis Milano collective. While Kuramata designed it in 1982 (not 1986), it remains one of the most distinctive vertical storage pieces of the movement.

Design and Aesthetics

Like Kuramata's other Memphis designs (such as the Imperial), the Nikko combines traditional Japanese minimalist principles with the colorful, surreal energy of the Italian collective.

  • Form: The cabinet is a narrow, vertical "totem" rising from a high, cylindrical base.

  • Storage: It features three drawers stacked at the top of the slender frame.

  • Color Palette: It is famous for its "dreamy retro" colors, typically featuring a soft pink (salmon) body with a black base and top, and electric blue or gray accents.

  • Material: Constructed from lacquered wood with integrated metal elements.

Specifications

  • Height: Approximately 170 cm to 174 cm (approx. 5.5 feet tall).

  • Footprint: Small and square, roughly 53–57 cm wide and 50–57 cm deep.
