Memphis - Polar, 1985.
Polar is a low coffee table designed by Michele De Lucchi in 1984 for the Memphis Milano collection. It is celebrated for its playful use of visual ambiguity and sculptural irony, appearing almost like a floating toy.
Design & Composition
Structure: The table is constructed from lacquered wood and entirely covered in the group's signature plastic laminate.
Aesthetic: It features a distinctive yellow top made of two overlapping circles that creates a generous display surface.
Base: The top is supported by a vertical, rectangular base decorated with a sharp black and white graphic pattern. A bright blue lacquered cylinder pierces through the structure to provide central support and structural stability.
Context: Polar is part of a series of four side tables from that era—alongside Kristall (1981), Flamingo (1984), and Continental (1984)—that reconfigure similar colors and geometric motifs in different ways.
