The Roma is a radical, armchair-throne designed in 1986 by Marco Zanini, a founding member of the Memphis Milano collective. It is widely considered one of the most iconic and experimental seating designs from the movement’s final years.

Design and Aesthetics

  • Form: The chair features a massive, "chunky" silhouette with wide, rounded armrests and a high back. Its design is a postmodern metaphor for a historical throne, referencing both ancient Roman monuments and the flamboyant, oversized thrones seen in mid-century Hollywood epics.

  • Material: Breaking from the group's standard use of plastic laminate, the Roma is crafted from reinforced fiberglass. This choice allowed for the seamless, molded curves that give the piece its sculptural quality.

  • Finish: It is famous for its iridescent, metallic-flake finish, which draws inspiration from flashy American "hot-rod" cars.

Variations and Availability

  • Colors: The chair was originally produced in a deep iridescent green and silver. A black pearlescent version and a newer 2025 silver reissue are also part of the catalogue.

  • Retailers: Authentic made-to-order editions are available through retailers such as Miliashop and Jane Richards Interiors.

  • Museum Collections: Due to its historical significance, the Roma is held in major permanent collections, including the Brooklyn Museum.
