The Big Sur is an eccentric, sculptural two-seater sofa designed by American artist Peter Shire for the Memphis Milano collective. While the Memphis group debuted in 1981, the Big Sur was specifically designed in 1986.

Design and Aesthetic

The piece is a hallmark of Shire's "West Coast" Memphis style, blending geometric abstraction with vivid colors.

  • Structure: It features a complex, asymmetrical frame made of lacquered wood. Shire described the design as "throwing geometric objects into the air" and letting them come together.

  • Contrast: The design relies on the tension between sharp, jagged angles (the frame) and soft, rounded elements (the upholstery).

  • Palette: It utilizes a sophisticated, clashing palette of primary and pastel colors, typical of the movement’s later years.

Specifications

  • Dimensions: Approximately 210 cm (W) x 72 cm (D) x 96 cm (H).

  • Materials: Wood structure with various color lacquers and fixed fabric-upholstered cushions
